A Piece of Tradition
At the beginning of 2020, we visited Taiwan and discovered their traditional culture had been preserved in the architecture, the streets, well-treasured artefacts and in the hospitable demeanor of the people themselves. The way we were treated by the locals; every small act of kindness, from a sincere smile to a casual yet heart-felt greeting from a passing by stranger all culminated in an experience that will remain with us for a long time.
On our first day in Taipei, we encountered a 90-year-old local with her daughter. A cordial and sincere salutation from the mother-daughter duo turned strangers into friends. They chatted to us with ease, almost as if they were catching up with an old friend. They led us to Di-Hua Street, one of the famed Old Streets in the district.
Here, they told us, are many things worth discovering.
The Old Streets of Taiwan are filled with history, from the terracotta tiles of the older rooftops to the cobblestoned alleyways lined with tightly-packed shops that may have once started as stands and street vendors. The Old Streets are a blend of the past with modern elements, where rows of mopeds wait patiently in the streets for their owners. Shopkeepers ply their wares from their stores - with the assistance of a microphone. Tucked into quiet corners are the most unassuming eateries with the most amazing dishes.
Di-Hua Street is one of those Old Streets, hidden away from the bustling metropolis of Taipei.
By chance, we happened across inBlooom. Our eyes were caught by the bags, pouches and table mats made from brightly printed fabrics on display through the storefront. Their meticulous designs drew inspiration from both nature and man-made artefacts. From prints of mosaics translated to fabric, to designs evoking the ocean life surrounding Taiwan, the store was an amalgamation of nostalgia and modern products.
We hereby wish to bring a piece of that history and Taiwanese hospitality home to Australia, and hope that we can share joy and add a splash of colours to your lives.
